We provide neuropsychological assessment for adults and seniors. These type of assessments are designed to help you better understand your cognition, or in other words, your thinking skills, and learn about how your brain functions.

Purpose

The main goal of a neuropsychological assessment is to understand how a person's brain works in areas like memory, attention, language, problem-solving, motor skills, personality changes, and managing emotions. These assessments can help identify areas of strength and weakness. They can also help  track changes in thinking and behavior over time, which can show how a neurological condition is progressing or how treatments are working.

Conditions Addressed

Neuropsychological assessments are often used to evaluate individuals who are concerned about their thinking or cognitive abilities. They are also helpful for people with neurological or medical conditions that may affect brain function. This includes conditions like traumatic brain injury (TBI), acquired brain injury (ABI), concussion, stroke, epilepsy, neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, dementia), and developmental disorders.

Components

The assessment begins with a clinical interview to gather information about your history, current symptoms, and daily functioning. With your permission, we may also talk to a partner, family member, or caregiver to get additional details.  We may review medical records, past assessment reports, or images (e.g., MRI, CT scan) to gain further insight.

Next, you will complete in-person cognitive testing. The psychometrist will guide you through a series of paper-and-pencil and/or computerized tests to measure different areas of cognitive function, such as memory, attention, processing speed, and problem-solving skills.

Our approach is thorough, using multiple methods to understand your unique cognitive strengths and challenges. This helps us understand how your brain works and how we can best support you in everyday life.

At the end of the assessment, you’ll receive a detailed report that includes our findings, any diagnoses (if applicable), and recommendations for next steps. This report provides a clear picture of your cognitive health and serves as a valuable resource for other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and effective care.

Various Domains are Assessed

IQ: We can comprehensively assess your intellectual ability, including IQ testing, to provide a detailed understanding of your cognitive strengths and areas of weakness.

Language: Assessing expressive and receptive language skills.

Visuospatial Skills: This includes the ability to perceive, analyze, and understand visual information, which is critical for tasks such as driving, navigating spaces, and recognizing objects or faces. Visuospatial assessments can help detect issues related to specific brain areas, such as the parietal lobe, and guide appropriate interventions.

Motor Skills: Assessing fine and gross motor skills.

Processing Speed: The speed in which you can process new information.

Attention and Concentration: Evaluating sustained attention, selective attention, and divided attention.

Learning and Memory: Assessing the ability to encode, store, and retrieve information.

Executive Functions: Evaluating higher-order cognitive processes like planning, problem-solving, and cognitive flexibility.

Emotional Functioning and Personality: Examining mood, affect, and emotional regulation.

Individualized Approach

The assessment is tailored to the individual's specific needs and concerns. It may be used to clarify a diagnosis, guide treatment planning, or provide recommendations for rehabilitation or intervention.

We can also serve as the coordinator on your team, facilitating communication and discussion of your assessment results and treatment recommendations among your healthcare team.

Feedback and Recommendations

Following the assessment, the neuropsychologist provides detailed feedback to the individual or their caregivers. This includes a discussion of strengths and weaknesses, diagnosis (if applicable), and treatment recommendations. You will have ample time to ensure that all of your questions are answered and you are feeling more confident on how to move forward in your life.

Why Should I see a Clinical Neuropsychologist?

Neuropsychological assessments are typically conducted by neuropsychologists, who are psychologists who have specialized trining in the relationship between brain function and behavior. These professionals have advanced training in both psychology and neuroscience, allowing them to understand the intricate relationship between brain function and behavior.

In Ontario, you are required to complete additional education, training and experience to declare competency and specialization to work in this area. At MCA, we are registered to work with adults and seniors.
